Liraglutide is prescribed for several purposes:
Type 2 diabetes management in adults and children 10 years and older, alongside diet and exercise, to improve blood sugar control (hyperglycemia) and reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events such as heart attack or stroke in adults with established heart disease (Victoza).
Weight management in adults and children 12 years and older with obesity or overweight conditions, in combination with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity (Saxenda).
Off-label uses may include weight loss in patients without diabetes.
Mechanism of Action
Liraglutide mimics the natural hormone GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), which is released after eating. It works by:
Increasing insulin secretion in response to elevated blood glucose
Reducing glucagon secretion to lower liver glucose production
Slowing gastric emptying to prolong satiety
Decreasing appetite, which contributes to weight loss over time.
Unlike natural GLP-1, which lasts only minutes, liraglutide has a 24-hour duration, allowing once-daily subcutaneous injections.
